The Berry Ranch, once a
working ranch and homestead.
Remnants of this homestead can still be found today.
One
of the canyons most successful prospectors, Peter Berry founded
the Last Chance copper mine on Horseshoe Mesa. The proceeds
from the mine allowed him to build one of the first hotels at
the Grand Canyon, the Grandview Hotel. It was the finest lodging
at the Canyon until 1907, when the Santa Fe Railroad began construction
on other lodging around the village area.

Peter
Berry lived at the ranch with his family, wife Martha and
three children, until the late 1930's. They were self-sufficient,
even devising a water-collection system off the metal roof
of their home. By stage coach, they were approximately 12
hours from Flagstaff, Arizona. After the Berry family left
their homestead, their ranch was unfortunately vandalized.
Little remains of the original buildings and their home.
